\fs24 Students will use the books they have borrowed from the library to refer to. It is important to have a chart with the format for recommending a book to refer to. Taking photos periodically to post around the "Recommend a Book" chart makes a pleasing visual display, and promotes some favourite books when the book covers can be seen in the photograph.\par

\fs24 Before book exchange begins, students meet with you in the story area. Begin by selecting some library books which are very familiar to the students. Have a chart nearby to refer to, outlining the basic steps to recommending a book (these are some which have been used successfully).\par
\pard\intbl\qc\par
\cf4 RECOMMENDING A BOOK\cf0\par
\pard\intbl 1. Show the book cover, read the title, author, and illustrator\par
          2. Provide a brief summary of the book\par
              "This book is about . . . "\par
          3. Explain and/or show your favourite part\par
          4. Who do you think would enjoy this book?\par
"This book would be good for someone who . . . "\par
\par
Work through the process using familiar stories, allowing you the opportunity to teach how to summarize appropriately (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW). Students really enjoy showing their favourite part. The last step helps students identify a broad theme or genre . . . i.e. "This book would be good for someone who likes adventure" or "who likes to make crafts at home" or "who likes a book with some scary parts" etc. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-108\trrh1251\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3

\fs24 Students in grades 2 & 3 need to answer a question on their Benchmark assessment "Would you recommend this story to someone else?" Teachers have reported that student responses to this test question have improved after a period of recommending books & listening to peers recommending books in the library.\fs36\cell\row\pard\b0\f2\fs32 \par
